Wednesday Workout: FIDE World Rapid & Blitz, Pt. 12 (Liang)

This week's Wednesday Workout continues our series on the 2024 FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championships, held December 26 – 31 in New York.

Our coverage of the rapid and blitz events focused on the winners, but several dozen Americans competed and many gained rating and delivered some nice upsets. Follow the above links to the first 11 parts of this series, which concludes today.

This week, we conclude our series with highlights from GM Awonder Liang. The University of Chicago senior is a creative, unorthodox player who made waves last fall for playing 1. a3 in the U.S. Championship against GM Leinier Dominguez (and getting a great position). In New York, Liang's achievements included a draw against GM Magnus Carlsen in the Rapid and a win over Carlsen's second GM Daniil Dubov in the Blitz.
