In the battle between youth and experience, each side claimed a major victory. The 18-year-old Murzin was thrilled to pull off an upset victory ahead of the likes of Carlsen and Caruana (the latter of whom he defeated in round two).
"My favorite moment was the game with Caruana in Round 2"

But the 37-year-old Humpy finished ahead of the reigning Women's World Champion and a number of up-and-comers such as 21-year-old IM Carissa Yip and 15-year-old IM Alice Lee.
If you aren't already following US Chess on X, now is a great time to do so! We have been posting round-by-round updates during the World Rapid and intend to do the same for the the World Blitz Championship and Women's Championship, which begins today at 2:00 p.m. EST.
We have also been sharing flash annotations of key games and key moments from top American players, which can be reviewed here. Some highlights are shared below:
Stay tuned later in the week/next year for a full report on the Rapid & Blitz, including highlights from many of the American players who have made quite a splash already.
Until then, enjoy following the Blitz event and follow along with us on X! After all, few things are more exciting than a time scramble:
"The future of chess is with rapid and blitz... Rapid and blitz are more spectacular and it's more enjoyable for spectators. The duration of the tournament is short so I think this is the future." - 🇮🇳 Humpy Koneru #RapidBlitz

The World Rapid Women's Champion certainly seems to have a point, as evidenced by her instructive endgame victory to the clinch the title:
Likewise, in the open, Murzin's victory came down to some last-second theatrics in the penultimate round:

While Caruana's early loss to Murzin saw him playing catch-up in the standings before finishing in an eventual tie for tenth with 8½/13, the best news of his event came when Indian GM Arjun Erigaisi drew his last-round game against French GM Alireza Firouzja. The draw left Arjun in a tie for fourth, meaning that he could win the World Blitz outright and still not win enough FIDE Circuit points to overtake Caruana in the standings.
🇺🇸 @FabianoCaruana has officially secured his spot in the next #FIDECandidates tournament through the #FIDECircuit! ♟️ 👏 🔥
Mathematically, there is no scenario in which his closest pursuer, Arjun Erigaisi, can catch up to him on the FIDE Circuit leaderboard, including at the… pic.twitter.com/1RB9L2rDlt— International Chess Federation (@FIDE_chess) December 30, 2024
