Humpy Koneru and Volodar Murzin Win 2024 FIDE World Rapid Championships

The 2024 FIDE World Rapid Championship and Women's Championship concluded Saturday, December 28 after three days of action on Wall Street in Manhattan. Russian GM Volodar Murzin won the open with a 10/13 score and Indian GM Humpy Koneru won the women's event with an 8½/11 score.

In the battle between youth and experience, each side claimed a major victory. The 18-year-old Murzin was thrilled to pull off an upset victory ahead of the likes of Carlsen and Caruana (the latter of whom he defeated in round two).

But the 37-year-old Humpy finished ahead of the reigning Women's World Champion and a number of up-and-comers such as 21-year-old IM Carissa Yip and 15-year-old IM Alice Lee.

Stay tuned later in the week/next year for a full report on the Rapid & Blitz, including highlights from many of the American players who have made quite a splash already.

Until then, enjoy following the Blitz event and follow along with us on X! After all, few things are more exciting than a time scramble:

The World Rapid Women's Champion certainly seems to have a point, as evidenced by her instructive endgame victory to the clinch the title:

Likewise, in the open, Murzin's victory came down to some last-second theatrics in the penultimate round:

While Caruana's early loss to Murzin saw him playing catch-up in the standings before finishing in an eventual tie for tenth with 8½/13, the best news of his event came when Indian GM Arjun Erigaisi drew his last-round game against French GM Alireza Firouzja. The draw left Arjun in a tie for fourth, meaning that he could win the World Blitz outright and still not win enough FIDE Circuit points to overtake Caruana in the standings.
