Overview

There are many Chess Camps offered that focus on training and instruction by various levels of Master, we have Masters as well that provide analysis on your games, and offer group lessons on tactics, strategy, openings, and endgames. But much of the daytime is focused on competing and playing the game we love. Some of the formats include Swiss, Quads and Blitz. Our chess camp provides a great experience to all campers while allowing for some flexible time to engage in other activities or enjoy some down time with new friends. There will be several events daily that all campers will play in but after that you can play more chess or select other scheduled but not mandated activities. This is an opportunity to get away from home and experience life on a college campus and enjoy what you love to do.

Itinerary

The camp is structured, but we also want to make the experience a fun one for all campers. Chess Enthusiasts will have plenty of events to play and compete in, but we also want to provide some recreation opportunities and other activities so the campers can rest their minds or just relax. Our camp is new, and we are excited to provide a chess camp experience that allows for some degree of freedom. We have several National Masters providing some level of instruction but more as an elective than a structured and mandated event. Semper Primus Chess Camp is designed to be a residential camp but allows for day campers as well. The Suites on campus are newer and the campus food is excellent. There are two daily tournaments and evening events may include sports, non-chess activities, blitz, or quick chess. But freedom of choice is a standard that we want to maintain for our campers. Our campus is very secure, and counselors will stay on site 24 hours a day.

Note To Parents:

First, I’d like to thank you for considering our Chess Camp. As a father of four I know how important it is to provide them with opportunities to grow. I grew up with 2 brothers and 2 sisters and it was my oldest brother who was born with cerebral palsy that introduced me and taught me the game of chess.

I decided to start up this camp because in my own search for a chess camp I had a hard time finding one that allowed for campers to have a full overnight experience, and on a college campus as many of them have college in their future. I am no stranger to running camps as I’m a Full-time woman’s college volleyball coach. I also wanted to have an overnight camp as I find in my dealings with this younger generation that they could use some more time around their peers and making new friends.

I expect to continue to improve the instruction and development of these young minds by bring in quality Masters who can better their game, I am pleased to already have some talented Masters for or 2024 staff. All chess tournaments are run by a USCF Tournament Director.

Our staff includes a Director, an Assistant Director, a Tournament Director, 3-4 Masters and camp counselors. We typically have a 1/10 ratio of counselors and campers in the suites.

Although the camp is for players entering grade 6th or higher, should you have a younger player and are interested in the camp you may call me and discuss. In addition, we are equipped to host parents that may want to stay in the area for the week if you don’t mind a dorm room. Dining options for parents are also available. The added day on the registration was designed for parents that don’t want to or can’t pick up their child on Friday but would prefer a Saturday pick up. I believe out TD is planning on running a tournament here on Saturday following the camp.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly.
