2025 Information Regarding Annual SafeSport Refresher Course Requirements

Once the initial SafeSport Trained course is completed, SafeSport refresher courses are required annually to maintain TD certification. Refresher courses must be taken within one year of the previous training completion date, with a 30-day grace period.

If this deadline is not met, your TD certification will be changed to inactive until the next required course is completed. You do not have to retake courses.

Here is the SafeSport certification schedule:

• SafeSport Trained - Not Affiliated (core course): Expires one year from the completion date.
• Refresher 1: Recognizing and Reporting Misconduct - Not Affiliated: Take within one year of your SafeSport Trained completion date, with a 30-day grace period.
• Refresher 2: Preventing Misconduct - Not Affiliated: Take within one year of your Refresher 1 completion date, with a 30-day grace period.
• Refresher 3: Creating a Positive Sport Environment - Not Affiliated: Take within one year of your Refresher 2 completion date, with a 30-day grace period.

Please note that each one-year period resets to the date of your most recent course completion. Therefore, it’s recommended that you take each refresher as close as possible to your previous course’s expiration date. (For example: Your SafeSport Trained course expires on September 1, 2025, but you decide to take Refresher 1 early, on August 1, 2025. Consequently, your Refresher 1 expiration date resets to August 1, 2026.)

To access instructions for Refresher 1, click here. The cost is $8.99 using coupon code FSChessDisR1972723. Expect to spend approximately 15-20 minutes completing the course.

To access Refresher 2, go to your SafeSport dashboard and select Refresher 2 under “Catalog.”  Refresher 2 is free. Expect to spend approximately 30 minutes completing the course.

If you are already completing SafeSport training through another sports organization, please contact the SafeSport help desk to link your account to US Chess so you get credit for completing the courses.

You can send a copy of your completion certificate to Melinda Matthews to expedite updating your member profile, or else look for your records to update within 14 days.
