2020 North American Junior Championships Announced

The 2020 North American Junior Chess Championships, Open U-20 and Girls U-20, will be held December 19-23, 2020 at the Charlotte Chess Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. The event is open to players aged under 20 as of January 1, 2020, (must be born in 2000 or after) representing Canada, Mexico or the United States.

This is a 9-round event with the first round on Saturday, December 19. Medals as well as direct FIDE titles and norms are awarded to the top three players in each section. Gold medalists receive the (W)IM title and a (W)GM norm and the complete list of titles and norms to be awarded can be found in the event regulations.

In accordance with US Chess Scholastic Invitational Event Requirements, the US Chess Official Representative (OR) in each section will be the player with the highest rating per the February 2020 US Chess rating supplement (regular rating) who registers with the tournament and notifies US Chess FIDE Events Manager, Chris Bird, christopher.bird@uschess.org by Sunday, November 1, 2020. The US Chess ORs will receive hotel conditions (complimentary shared double room) and a $100 entry fee discount.

Registration for the 2020 North American Junior Chess Championships is done directly with the organizers and should be done by November 20, 2020, to pay the lowest entry fee. Players are responsible for their own entry fees, lodging, food, transportation, and travel. It is not necessary to send registration details to US Chess. Complete information and registration can be found at the organizer’s website. Although the organizers will accept registrations until December 18, US Chess urges all interested players to register early. The North American Junior organizers can be contacted at grant@charlottechesscenter.org.
