Rade Milovanovic, UT Dallas Chess Team Coach, to Retire

The coach of the University of Texas at Dallas chess team, Rade Milovanovic, has announced that he will retire in January. Milovanovic joined the UT Dallas chess program in 1999. Prior to that, he graduated from Belgrade University’s law school in Serbia. In all he has more than 40 years of coaching experience. “Rade’s knowledge and leadership at UT Dallas over the last 20 years helped elevate our status as a collegiate chess powerhouse,” said James Stallings, director of the UT Dallas chess program. “He will be greatly missed.” During his tenure at UT Dallas, Milovanovic led the chess team to 10 first-place finishes in the Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship, something no other college chess coach has done. In addition, Milovanovic steered the UT Dallas team to five first place finishes in the President’s Cup (The Final Four) of college chess. An International Master from Serbia, Milovanovic led UT Dallas to 11 Texas collegiate championships, nine national collegiate chess league championships, and six Transatlantic Cup victories. During his coaching time at UT Dallas, three team members became Grandmasters. “That’s quite a feat since the students all maintain full course loads,” Stallings said.
