US Chess Seeks Part Time Assistant Editor

Position Title: Assistant Editor
Department: Communications
FLSA: Non-Exempt, 20 hours/week
Reports to: Chess Life/Chess Life Kids Editor
Location: St. Louis, Missouri; telecommute possible

Position Overview: The Assistant Editor is responsible for assisting in the production of all US Chess print publications, primarily Chess Life and Chess Life Kids, with some digital responsibilities as well. This part-time position with flexible hours is focused around Central Time hours.

Essential Job Functions

  • Content planning with the Editor
  • Content editing using AP Stylebook and US Chess Style Guide
  • Some content creation (US Chess Affairs, First Moves, etc.)
  • Manage the following annual items under the supervision of the Editor:
    • Index
    • Postal Statements Annual Filing
  • Maintain US Chess Style Guide
  • Special Projects as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Skills and Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher (a degree in Journalism or English preferred, or significant professional experience in lieu of a degree)
  • A fundamental understanding of journalism and editing practices, including the AP Stylebook
  • Experience with a variety of editorial areas, including writing, editing, interviewing, and proofreading in digital and print formats
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and the ability to learn new software programs such as ChessBase and the Adobe Creative suite (especially InDesign)
  • Ability to read chess notation
  • Familiarity with US Chess culture (especially rated tournament play)
  • Strong time management skills with an ability to work independently
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Strong attention to detail
