US Chess Seeks Copy Editor in Communications Department

Job Title: Copy Editor

Hours: 32 hours, non-exempt. Monday-Friday between US Chess core hours 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Central Time. Occasional evening and weekend work may be needed.

Status: Non-exempt

Overview: US Chess is hiring a Copy Editor, a 32-hour position within US Chess. This position is responsible for copy editing, proofreading, fact-checking, and researching within both print and digital media for the US Chess Communications department to ensure all work is free of typos, grammatical errors, errors in chess notation, and that all text adheres to both the AP Stylebook and US Chess Style Guide.

Reports to: The Copy Editor reports directly to the Chess Life/CLO Editor and/or the Publications Editor depending on particular assignments.

Major Areas of Responsibility

  • Copy edit and fact check files for Chess Life, Chess Life Kids, Chess Life Online, tournament program books, governance materials, and other documents as assigned
  • Create advertising mark-up for Chess Life monthly and Chess Life Kids bi-monthly
  • Maintain the annual yearbook
  • Maintain the annual Chess Life index

Required Skills

  • Strong copy editing and fact checking skills
  • Basic knowledge of chess and the chess world
  • Familiarity with various kinds of chess notation
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite

Additional Skills

  • Demonstrated work ethic with strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, adhere to deadlines, and adapt to change
  • Ability to work independently
  • Familiarity with US Chess history and governance is a plus
  • Knowledge of InDesign or demonstrated ability to learn new software
  • Knowledge of ChessBase or demonstrated ability to learn new software
  • Familiarity with AP Stylebook a plus

Education and Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university (degree in Journalism or English preferred but not required)
  • Previous copy-editing experience for a print or web publication

Salary and Benefits

  • Salary commensurate with experience, 32 hours per week
  • Telecommuting, unless local to Crossville, Tennessee. If local, work in our headquarters. US Chess adheres to a Central Standard Time schedule. If telecommuting, the candidate is required to maintain their own reliable high-speed internet connection.
