SafeSport Training: Deadline Information and Refresher Course FAQ

June 1, 2024, is the deadline for all US Chess-certified Tournament Directors (TDs) to complete authorized core training from the U.S. Center for SafeSport. 

TDs who have not completed training by June 1, 2024, will have their certification changed to inactive and must complete SafeSport core training before their TD certification will be reactivated. Requests to reactivate must be submitted in writing to Click here to show email address and can take up to 10 business days to process, so plan your schedule accordingly. 

With both the June 1 deadline and the spring scholastic tournament season rapidly approaching, those who have not already completed the SafeSport core training should visit the Safe Play hub to download instructions for the core course.

Refresher Courses

SafeSport refresher training is required in order to maintain TD certification. Cost is $9.

The refresher course must be completed by the one-year anniversary of the previous training completion date. There is a 30-day grace period for SafeSport refresher training only. (For example, if you completed your core course on March 1, 2024, your Refresher 1 course will need to be completed by March 31, 2025.)

Refresher Course FAQs

1. What is my deadline for completing the refresher course?

• You must complete your refresher course within one year of the previous year’s training completion date. Important to note: Complete your training as close as possible to your anniversary date, as an early renewal will reset subsequent trainings to the earlier date.
   

2. Is there a grace period?

• There will be a 30-day grace period to complete refresher courses only. (For example, if you completed your core course on March 1, 2024, your refresher course should be completed by March 1, 2025, but you will not be marked inactive until March 31, 2025.)
   

3. What is the cost and who pays for the training?

• The refresher training costs $9. The covered person pays for the training.
   

4. Will TDs receive automatic reminders to update their SafeSport training?

• TDs will receive a reminder 30 days prior to their certification expiration dates.
   

5. What is the penalty for not completing the refresher course?

• If you do not complete refresher training before the end of your grace period, your TD certification will become inactive.
