The January MUIR Report

US Chess announced the launch of the new Member Uploads, Information, and Reporting (MUIR) system last fall to replace the separate Member Services Area (MSA) and Tournament Director and Affiliate Area (TD/A). This is part of our ongoing plan to modernize our digital infrastructure. MUIR is an entirely new platform that supports data uploads, rating reports, and member information management in one integrated system. Its potential is great, and we look forward to realizing it together.

Both US Chess and Leago have spent hundreds of hours in testing and preparation, but as with any system overhaul of this size, unexpected issues were bound to arise after launch. User feedback has been invaluable as we continue refining the system, and we appreciate your continued patience and trust.

With this post, US Chess is releasing its first quarterly report on the state of the new MUIR system. These reports will share what issues have already been addressed, are currently being addressed, and have plans to be addressed in the future. Their purpose is to share ongoing work and to inform members about upcoming plans.

If you have questions or concerns about MUIR that are not addressed in this report, please contact Click here to show email address.

The January MUIR Report

Completed Items

These items are completed. Please contact us if you experience any issue with these items.

  • Tournament Payment Receipts — TDs and organizers reported they were not receiving emails with receipts after making payments on MUIR.

    • This has been addressed, and the email receipt process has been implemented.

  • Promo Codes — Promo codes are needed to support controlled flexibility within the payment system.

    • If you or your affiliate has previously used promo codes to rate events, you should have been contacted with instructions on how to continue doing so now in MUIR.

In Progress Items

These items are currently underway. For most of them, we expect them to be completed shortly. In the time being, we are aware of and addressing various issues with these items.

  • Regular Rankings — One benefit of the MUIR system is a clearer sense of state and national rankings for players based on their rating. Clearly defined state and national rankings are now displayed on player profile pages.

    • It takes time to go back through older data. Some updates are still in progress, pending data from before 2022.

    • This means members can expect small adjustments to rankings as older data is incorporated.

  • Rerates (Enhancement) — In the near future, members can expect weekly rerates to be reestablished.

    • Currently, nightly small rerates are being done with larger rerates to resume shortly.

    • These are small fixes that are done to order tournaments properly by the order they were played, rather than the order they were submitted to the system.

    • We expect to see this system implemented going back for all events over the past two years by week’s end.

  • Top 100 Rankings — Calculations, contact workflow, and publishing

    • Top 100 lists are now being computed and displayed properly. They will continue to be going forward.

    • All 2025 Top 100 lists have been migrated to the new system, with some minor edge cases still to be sorted out.

    • Top 100 lists for years before 2024 have not yet been migrated but will be in the future.

    • Anyone on a Top 100 list for any month in 2025 currently has that information displayed on their member page.

    • Updates to ensure that provisional ratings and inactive players are excluded from Top 100 lists will be incorporated to Top 100 lists going forward.

    • In the future, players who have been on historical Top 100 lists prior to 2025 will also have that archived information displayed on their member page.

  • Tournament Director Information — Displaying details on membership page

    • Currently, member pages on MUIR do not display members’ TD level, expiration date, counts, or Safe Play status.

    • Addressing this is one of our highest priorities, and soon member pages will display these directorship details.

    • Display directorship details (level, expiration, counts, Safe Play status) are coming shortly. This is a significant undertaking.

    • MUIR is not currently storing (or checking) TD certification, but this is also in development.

  • Milestones — Norm calculations and norm-based titles.

    • Member pages now display earned titles such as National Master (NM) and Original Life Master (OLM).

    • Pages now also display win-count recognitions migrated from the old system.

    • Soon it will be possible to manually input or change rating floors.

    • A new gamification system with more achievements/milestones is in the process of being implemented.

  • Grand Prix Calculations

    • End-of-year calculations and data are being checked manually to finalized Grand Prix standings.

  • Payment for Multiple Events — Bulk submissions.

    • Affiliates will soon be able to upload and pay for multiple tournament reports at once.

Future Work

These are items that we plan to launch in the future.

  • Email notifications from tournaments

    • There is no longer an option to receive email updates when tournaments are rated.

    • This is because these notifications have been a substantial drain on the system, whereas there is more (and will continue to be even more) information available on MUIR.

    • Players will be encouraged to visit http://ratings.uschess.org/ rather than rely on email notifications.

    • In the future, US Chess plans to send monthly recap emails sharing what notifications you have received from within MUIR.

  • Activity and auto-renewal

    • In the future, a TD’s status for renewal should be displayed on member pages.

    • Membership expiration date is currently listed on member pages, and TD certification expiration dates will eventually be added here as well.

  • Live rating incorporation

    • Currently, ratings displayed on member pages default to the official rating.

    • In the future, we plan to implement a “toggle” option to switch between the official ratings supplement and live ratings.

  • Billing portal

    • A user interface (UI) will be built to display bills for Affiliate Managers and TDs.

    • The billing system is already functional; now the UI needs to be implemented.

  • Ratings and reports

    • There is a potential plan to use AI development to scrape the system for more advanced queries

    • Example: “who was the youngest-ever master in my state?” or “which state has the most players rated over 2000 under age 15?”

Your continued attention to the new MUIR system has helped tremendously as we navigate this transition. Please contact Click here to show email address with any questions, comments, or additional feedback.
