Flash Report: Atwell, Liu Win 2026 National High School (K-12) Championship

Chicago, IL: The 501(c)3 US Chess Federation’s National High School (K-12) Championship took place from March 27 through 29 at the Chicago Sheraton Grand Riverwalk. Over 1,500 students competed between the Championship section and the five under/unrated sections.

Below are the individual and team winners of each Championship section. When co-champions are listed, they are in tiebreak order. This page will be uploaded ASAP with photos from the awards ceremonies. A full report, including analysis from WGM Sabina Foisor and more photos from Sunday's rounds and events, will be available later in the day on Monday. Daily recaps are already available for Friday's opening rounds and Saturday's games.

All individual scores, for all sections, are out of seven points. All team scores are out of 28 points. Standings are available here, but check the "Winners" tab to confirm tie-break scores. This report will continue to be updated as soon as possible with photos from the awards ceremonies. 

The individual K-12 Co-Champions are (in tiebreak order):

  • FM Rose Atwell, 11th grade, California
  • IM Eric Chang Liu, 10th grade, Texas

Atwell and Liu finished with 6½/7 scores. This is Liu's fourth straight year winning at least a share of a spring scholastic championship, having won the 2023 National Middle School (K-8) Championship outright, followed by tying for first the next year, and tying for first again last year in the K-12 Championship section of SuperNationals VIII.
