Chess Girls DC Hosts All Girls Tourney with $1000 Scholarship

On April 15, 2017, Chess Girls DC hosted the District of Columbia All Girls Chess tournament. The event was composed of rated and unrated chess players.  It was held in the beautiful PEPCO Edison Art Gallery in Washington, DC. For the first time in the history of chess tournaments in Washington, DC a $1,000 scholarship award was presented to the first place winner of the city wide all girls chess tournament. The Ben’s Chili Bowl Foundation funded the scholarship award on behalf of Chess Girls DC. In total, 32 girls participated in the tournament. Mr.David Mehler was the tournament director. The event was also supported by City First Bank in Washington,DC.The mission of Chess Girls DC is to build the confidence of girls using Chess as a tool. Dedicated to creating opportunities for girls to intellectually challenge the world, Chess Girls DC provides financial support to disadvantaged students to attend chess tournaments and pay for USCF memberships.  Chess Girls DC believes that great leaders have the same attributes as great chess players.  Using attributes such as, strategic thinking, managing tough decisions, risk taking, long term planning, balancing multiple considerations will place girls in a posture to be successful business leaders.
