2021 North American Youth Championships Announced

The 2021 North American Youth Chess Championships organizers are excited to announce they are moving forward with the tournament which will be held August 16-21, 2021 at the Hilton Chicago, 700 S. Michigan Ave, Chicago, Illinois.

Tournament Information

The age categories for the 2021 North American Youth are Under 8, Under 10, Under 12, Under 14, Under 16, and Under 18. Each category has an Open and Girls section. A player’s age for this tournament is his/her age as of January 1, 2021. This event is open to players from The Bahamas, Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Each section is a 9-round Swiss tournament with a time control of 90 minutes plus 30-second increment per move. Round one starts on August 17 and there will be a Blitz Tournament on August 16. Medals as well as direct FIDE titles and norms are awarded to the top three players in each section.

The organizers recognize the challenges presented by COVID-19 and are implementing precautionary measures to prevent and reduce the spread of COVID-19 among players and guests at the tournament.

Registration and Lodging

Registration is done directly with the organizers, not with US Chess. Players should register with the organizers by June 15 in order to receive the lowest entry fee, however registration can be done onsite as late as August 16. Lodging is arranged directly with the hotel and should be done by July 27 to take advantage of the discounted rate. It is recommended to reserve your hotel needs early as space is limited.

All players are responsible for their own entry fees, lodging, food, transportation and travel costs.

US Chess Official Representatives

In accordance with US Chess Scholastic Invitational Requirements, the US Chess Official Representative in each of the 12 sections will be the player with the highest rating per the February 2021 US Chess rating supplement who registers with the organizers and notifies US Chess FIDE Events Manager Chris Bird, Click here to show email address by Tuesday, June 15. These Official Representatives will be eligible to receive free accommodation for 5 nights starting August 16 from the organizers - double occupancy, those who want single occupancy may pay the difference.
