The Results Are In at the NHS!

The results are in at the 2019 National High School Championship, and we have a three-way tie for first place in the Championship Section. After drawing in round six, GM Nicolas Checa and FM David Peng both won their last round games to finish with 6.5/7. Peng repeats as champion, having won the 2018 National High School. NM Matthew Stevens joined them in the winner’s circle by defeating Ben Li in the final round. Thomas Jefferson High School (Alexandria, VA) won the Team title by a half-point over Whitney Young High School (Chicago, IL), 21.0 to 20.5. Lakeside School (Seattle, WA) finished in third with 19.5 team points. Washington’s Theodore “Teddy” Roberts was the clear winner in the U1900 section, scoring a perfect 7/7 to take the title. Stevenson High from Lincolnshire, IL won the U1900 Team title. Francis Michael Sheeny and Sivabalan Muthupalaniappan, both from Illinois, are the new U1600 co-champs, each scoring 6.5/7 to earn their shares of the title. There was a three-way tie for the U1600 Team title, with Glenbrook North HS (IL), Evanston Township HS (IL), and Pocono Mountain East HS (PA) all laying claim to the honor. Yonatan Wiese-Namir did his home state of Pennsylvania proud with his flawless 7/7 score in the U1200 section, taking the title back to the Keystone State. Wiese-Namir’s team, Abington High School, is also bringing back some hardware, having won the U1200 Team title. The U800 section saw another perfect score with William Quinn’s 7/7 performance. Quinn’s unaccompanied standing at the top of the table helped propel his school, Mount Carmel High School (IL), to a massive team victory in the U800 section. Mount Carmel finished a whopping 4.5 points ahead of second-place finishers Nekoosa High School (WI). Illinois’ Jack Hensen tallied 6.5/7 in the Unrated section to claim sole ownership of first place. Sterling High School, also from Illinois, was the top Unrated team.
