Opt-In Fee for Print Copies of Chess Life and Chess Life Kids Changes on January 1, 2023

For the first time since June 1, 2021, US Chess is adjusting the opt-in fee charged to receive either of our print magazines. Effective January 1, 2023 Chess Life’s opt-in fee will be $12 (for 12 monthly issues) and Chess Life Kids’ fee will be $6 (for 6 bi-monthly issues).

This increase over the previous fees is due to volatility in the paper market and significantly higher mailing fees charged by the U.S. Postal Service. This is the first time we have adjusted our rates in the 17 months since the new membership structure was put in place.

Printed copies of Chess Life or Chess Life Kids are an add-on to any Adult, Senior, Young Adult or Youth membership. Your membership entitles you to purchase one or both at the member rate, set at no more than 105% of printing and mailing costs. There is no change to membership rates. Only the print opt-in fee is changing. If you are currently enjoying digital access to the magazines only, there will be no rate increases for you at all.

Current members will continue to receive their print magazines after January 1 if previously opted in; only when you renew your membership will you have to pay the new rate if you want to continue receiving your print magazine. You can renew your membership up until December 31, 2022 to select the current opt-in fees of $9.35 (Chess Life) and/or $4.75 (Chess Life Kids).

None of this affects Life Members or Benefactors Members who will continue to receive their print magazine with no opt-in fee if they have selected to receive it.
