Last week one of my favorite yearly events, the Spice Cup Open, concluded in Saint Louis, Missouri. With both Webster University and Saint Louis University now fielding powerful rosters of Grandmasters, the Spice Cup had a total of 22 GMs, many of them representing foreign federations, which makes the Spice Cup a great tournament for norm seekers.

Historical site for the 42nd Peoples Tournament: The Faculty Club at UC Berkeley

GM Holt Wins the 42nd People’s Tournament

Since this heritage tournament was originally founded and first held in Berkeley, CA, bringing it back to this location was extremely important emotionally for many of the players in the Northern California chess community. The historical site provided a majestic, comfortable, and intimate venue for the distinguished members of the NorCal chess community.
