Join us for the next installment of free Chess in Education Webinars, sponsored by the Chess in Education Committee. The date for this month’s webinar is March 26, 2023, 8 PM ET and features Hamilton K-8 California - Creating recreational chess programs to foster the love of chess.

Hamilton K-8 School is a public school in Novato, California that has built a culture and community of chess players where about 70% of the population now knows how to play, with half being girls in a school of 600 kids. The secret of its success has been in using chess as a social activity that creates a safe space while at the same time challenging students to be their best. We will explain how a culture of recreational chess can be used to engage new students and how to nurture that community to keep the fun while at the same time developing players towards excellence.

We will discuss:

  • How the program at Hamilton got started.
  • What is the overall philosophy and goal of the club and how it promotes more interest.
  • How to incorporate a growth mindset to teaching and the power of believing in students' ability to rise to challenges.
  • Teacher tips for managing different sets of expectations and different skill groups.
