US Chess Digital Editor Appears on Podcast

Chess Life columnist John Hartmann, recently hired as Digital Editor for Chess Life Online, appeared on this week’s edition of the Perpetual Chess Podcast.

Now well into its third year, Perpetual Chess is currently one of the most popular chess-themed podcasts, and host Ben Johnson has interviewed some of the leading writers, players, and personalities in chess today.

Hartmann recorded his end of the podcast from the second floor of the Saint Louis Chess Club as the U.S. Championships were being fought out. Among the topics they discussed:

  • The 2019 Open and Women’s Championships seen ‘midstream.’
  • Important new chess books
  • Alpha Zero and Leela Chess Zero
  • His new job as CLO Digital Editor
  • Plugs for US Chess podcasts
  • The changing landscape for chess publishing
  • A long discussion of the importance of serious book criticism, how Hartmann deals with his critics and Internet trolls, and what it took to make his name in chess.
