The Las Vegas Chess Festival began with a star-studded US Women’s Open, and sixth seed Saikhanchimeg Tsogtsaikhan took it down after defeating National Girls Tournament of Champions winner Rochelle Wu in the final round. Grandmaster Illia Nyzhnyk won the Walter Browne Memorial Blitz tournament for the trophy and $1000, with a score of 11.5/14. The Main Event of Festival, the National Open, began on Thursday night with the four-day section, and a fearsome list of pre-registered Grandmasters, including Dariusz Swiercz, blitz champ Nyzhnyk, blitz runner up and Chicago Open winner Alex Shimanov and teenage GMs Ruifeng Li and Akshat Chandra. Also in the mix: US Women’s Championship runner-up Annie Wang as well as 2017 US Women’s champ Sabina Foisor and NGTOC Champ Wu.
