Welcome to "One Move at a Time," the show where we highlight people and organizations that are advancing our US Chess mission statement to "Empower people, enrich lives, and enhance communities through chess." Show host Dan Lucas, the Senior Director of Strategic Communication at US Chess, talks today with Howard Burton from Ideas Roadshow, an award-winning multimedia initiative dedicated to harnessing the benefits of modern technology to explore ideas across the arts and sciences through thoughtful and seriously-entertaining documentary films, books and podcasts. Howard has created a four-part documentary called  THROUGH THE MIRROR OF CHESS: A CULTURAL EXPLORATION, as well as a companion book Chessays.

The films provide a comprehensive investigation into the remarkable significance of chess across a wide range of times and places touching on cultural history, the nature of competitiveness, artificial intelligence, chess variants, art, literature, psychology, education, and much more in an attempt to comprehensively address the question of what makes our game so unique.

Howard Burton is an independent filmmaker and author of five other books in addition to Chessays. He holds a PhD in physics and an MA in philosophy, and was the founding executive director of Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics from 1999-2007. He lives in France.

The show is available on our US Chess YouTube channel.
