Main Event Underway in Orlando: "It's Checkmate!"

The Main Event of the K-12 Chess Championships are underway in Orlando. The tournament began with a moment of silence for Former US Chess President and passionate advocate for our royal game, Ruth Haring. IM Greg Shahade captured many dramatic moments on his twitter takeover @USChess including this viral tweet. https://twitter.com/USChess/status/1073653620065869825 In our last report, we mentioned that Jennifer and Carlos Hoyos, a brother-sister duo from Florida, tied for first in the bug tourney, taking home the trophy on tiebreak over higher rated team of IM Hans Niemann and NM Raghav Venkat. We also caught them battling over the board in the Main Event in round one- Jennifer is in 9th grade and Carlos is a senior. https://twitter.com/USChess/status/1073754554997633025 These first two rounds also featured plenty of convincing victories, as well as impressive upsets. https://twitter.com/USChess/status/1073758362200891392 https://twitter.com/USChess/status/1073756594985406475
