Chess Life Editor and US Chess Director of Publications Dan Lucas was featured today in the “Ask Amy” column, which is syndicated in 150 newspapers across the country with an estimated 22 million readers. The column's featured question was from a man who tried to resign against a woman in a totally lost position. However, the woman did not accept the resignation, intent on composing a checkmate. Lucas is quoted, “The Russian-born grandmaster Savielly Tartakower wrote, ‘No game was ever won by resigning.’ While it is true you should fight to the bitter end, there can come a point where a game is hopelessly lost, and in that case, most players on the winning side find it rude if their opponent continues to play on — resignation is expected. “There is no such thing in chess as ‘not accepting a resignation.’ The next time you are facing a lost game, offer your opponent a firm handshake and say, ‘I resign, good game.’ You can even punctuate this by tipping your king over.” Find the full question and answer here and look for more insights from Dan Lucas in his Editor’s Notebook live from the upcoming World Chess Championship.
