Blindfold King Sees His Way to Victory at the 49th Annual Atlantic Open

GM Timur Gareyev, the Blindfold King, won the Atlantic Open held August 25-27 at the Washington DC Crystal City Hilton with a score of 4 ½ – ½.  While he didn’t have to play blindfolded, he did play an unintentional Swiss gambit.  He drew the first round against expert Kenneth Thomas.  He then had to play from behind in a field that included five GMs.

The only GM vs. GM matchup occurred on board one in the last round when Gareyev had white against GM Sergey Erenburg.  The winner would at least tie for first.  On board two, GM Julio Sadorra had white versus FM Andrew Samuelson.  Given the 300 point rating difference, one would have expected Sadorra to win and at least tie for first.  However, Sadorra drew and had to settle for a tie for second.  So, Gareyev achieved clear first with his last round win and won the $3000 first prize and the $100 bonus for clear first.

Gareyev’s mixed double team also finished in a five way tie for the second mixed double team, so he was able to add another $80 to his winnings.  Gareyev didn’t play in the blitz, so he couldn’t get the triple crown hat trick!

Sadorra and GM Akshayraj Kore finished at 4-0, and each won $1150.  Sadorra gave up two draws while Kore took two half point byes.  Gareyev was kind enough to provide all of his games with some light annotations.  They are presented in round order.  You can also check out Gareyev’s blog at  He provides more comments in his adventures link.
