Staff Bio

Dan has worked for US Chess since 2005, starting as the Director of Publications. In that role, he also served as editor of Chess Life, ultimately becoming the second-longest serving editor of our flagship publication. In May 2018 he was promoted to his current position as Senior Director of Strategic Communication where he has responsibility for all internal and external communications, including print, web, and policy documents. Outside of work, he is an active tennis player (he runs the annual tennis event at our U.S. Open each year!) and enjoys hiking with his dog. Before he came to US Chess, he had a varied background as a freelance writer, retail manager, catering company manager, and chess teacher. He hosts the US Chess podcast “One Move at a Time” and was the first host of the podcast “Cover Stories with Chess Life.” He is a past president of the Chess Journalists of America, and in 2024 he was inducted into the Georgia Chess Association Hall of Fame.
