The Details

Qualifications: Every K-12 student who is a member of the United States of America Chess Federation (USCF) on the day of the tournament shall be qualified to participate. High schoolers who graduated in 2022 are eligible to compete.

Registration: To register, please visit https://innovativechesssolutions.com/event/july-international-scholastic-swiss/ Additional fees may be charged by Eventbrite, in addition to your entry fee, if you register electronically. Such fees are nonrefundable in all cases. Refunds are made to the original payment method or as a credit for future events, the one or the other to be chosen by the registrant. Credits expire two years after issuance.

Schedule: The first round commences at 11:00am (Central Time) and each subsequent round as soon as possible thereafter. Although the tournament is expected to last approximately four hours, the actual duration thereof may vary.

Capacity: The maximum capacity of this tournament is 100. As space is limited, register now before someone else takes your place.

Ratings: This tournament is USCF rated and will affect players' online regular rating. Rating qualifications for sections and prizes will be determined according to the player's online regular rating as shown on the July Supplement unless the tournament director assigns a different rating. Players with foreign ratings shall disclose such ratings before the event.

Prizes: Fifty percent of all entry fees received (net of refunds) will be issued as prizes in the form of Amazon gift cards. The organizer will determine the manner in which this amount will be divided. Class prizes may be awarded. If two or more players tie for any prize, the same will be equally divided between them.

Fair-Play: Ensuring that the highest standards of fair play are observed in this tournament is of the utmost importance to the organizer. Players will be monitored on a Zoom call during the duration of the tournament and must keep their camera on for such time. Backgrounds are not allowed. As an additional precaution against cheating, we will not issue any prizes until at least one week since the tournament has passed. If anyone used a chess engine or book while playing in this event, Chess.com will almost certainly detect such violations and expel the violators from the platform. In such event, we will impose such other sanctions that we, in our sole discretion, deem proper, including, but not limited to, disqualification from accepting any prize and forfeiture of all games. If you would like to discover more about how chess.com’s vigorous anti-cheating procedures work, please visit: https://www.chess.com/article/view/online-chess-cheating

Technical Provisions: To participate in this event, registrants will need to: (1) Create a free Chess.com account (if they do not already have one); (2) Join our Chess.com club; (3) Click on the first link we will provide to join the Chess.com tournament marked with their section; and; (4) Click on the second link to join the Zoom meeting. Players should use computers to play in this event, but exceptions will be made upon request if this is impractical for your family. Also, if you use a different username than the one mentioned upon registration, please notify us of the change in advance.

Other Notes: Sections may be merged in the event of low turnout.

Side Events

General: In addition to the main event, we offer two side events that will begin shortly after the main event concludes. You can register for either or both of these side events, with or without playing in the main event. As these side events are not eligible for USCF rating, USCF membership is not required for the side events alone.

Triple-Opening Blitz: This side event offers nine blitz games in total, with a G/3 time control. An election will be held among the players to choose three predetermined openings, and each opening will be the starting position for three games. This side event will begin at 3:10pm (CT) on the day of the main event and last approximately one hour.

Triple-Variant Blitz: This side event offers nine blitz games in total, with a G/3 time control. This tournament will feature three chess variants (Fischer Random/Chess960, Crazyhouse and 3 Check). All of these variants have the same chess rules, except for a few alternations. In the first variant, the starting placement of all your pieces (except pawns) is randomized, thereby requiring you to think without the benefit of opening theory. In the second variant, whenever you capture a piece, you obtain the right to place it on any empty square (other than the first or eighth rank) in the future with its color changed to your color. Finally, in the third variant, in addition to the normal ways of winning, you win whenever you have checked your opponent three times (need not be successive). This side event will begin at 4:20pm (CT) on the day of the main event and last approximately one hour.

Entry Fee: $5 by July 5; and $10 thereafter. Eventbrite's fees also apply, but if you register for both side events at the same time, you receive a discount on Eventbrite's fees.

Prizes: 50% of entry fees (net of refunds) received for each side event will be issued as Amazon gift cards. Class prizes may be issued to lower-rated players.

Other Details: These side events will not require your presence on a Zoom call. Except as specially provided for these side events, the rules and regulations for the main event (including on fair play issues) also applies to the side events.
