OVERVIEW

  • This workshop is only for kids (all ages under 18).

  • This is a one-day in-person workshop on August 11, 2024. The workshop will be held at the Hampton Inn by Hilton Washington-Dulles International Airport South. The address for the hotel is 4050 Westfax Drive, Chantilly, VA 20151.

  • The workshop will be divided into three groups based on experience level. In the bottom two groups (Under 800 and advanced), students will play a USCF-rated game (25 minutes with a 5-second delay) and then do analysis with the GM. The elite group has no rated games and more lecture time instead. Each of the three groups meets at a different time during the day:

    • Under 800 group (9 am to 1 pm)

      • This group is designed for students ranging from absolute beginner to 800 USCF (see note about possible rating disparities below).

      • Because this group has the widest rating range, we may decide to subdivide this group into two smaller sections if necessary. There are a few ways we may do this. For example, we could have the beginners play rated games while the higher rated kids do their lecture, and then switch. We can also have USCF Expert/Chess Author Kevin Stokker work with some of the lower-rated students in a separate group. If there is a large rating disparity, we will make our best judgment on the day of the workshop about how to deal with it. Regardless of whether your child is a beginner or closer to the top of this group, the workshop will be a worthwhile experience for them.

      • For rated games, students will be paired with their classmate who is closest in rating (ladder-style pairings).

    • Advanced group (1:30 pm to 5:30 pm)

      • This group is designed for students with USCF ratings from 800 to 1300.

      • If your child is rated lower than 800, they will still be allowed to participate, but the lesson plan may be too challenging for them. It will be their responsibility to keep up with the course material.

      • For rated games, students will be paired with their classmate who is closest in rating (ladder-style pairings).

    • Elite group (6 pm to 10 pm)

      • This group is designed for students with USCF ratings from 1300 to 2000.

      • If your child is rated lower than 1300, they will still be allowed to participate, but the lesson plan may be too challenging for them. It will be their responsibility to keep up with the course material.

      • Unlike the other two sections, this section does not involve any rated games or analysis. This section will include additional lecture time instead of games and analysis.
