Event Overview
PURPOSE: Our goal is to expand rated chess opportunities in our community to benefit and encourage both new and experienced players.
SPECIAL PROMOTIONS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
- Always FREE registration for players with current USCF rating over 2000! Entry fee deducted from winnings.
- A minimum of $50 from collections will be reserved for a stipend fund for the Region I High School Champion to attend the 2025 State Scholastic Championship. If that player is unable to attend, the stipend will be awarded to the next highest finishing player who is able to attend.
EVENT OVERVIEW & SCHEDULE
- Date: Saturday, November 16, 2024
- Location: Mad Hatter's House of Games; 1507 Texas Ave., Lubbock, TX 79401
- Deadlines: EARLY (Online) registration closes at 6pm on Friday, November 15, 2024. Register at https://forms.gle/yGKxJeEmh9jcDh9TA. Onsite registration is open until 30 minutes before the published start time of each event (10:30am for Blitz or 2:00pm for Quads).
- Cost: FREE registration for players with current USCF rating over 2000!; entry fee deducted from cash winnings; $15/player for one event or $25 for both events for Early (Online) registered players; $20/player for one event or $30 for both events for Late (On-site) registration; all payments payable at check-in onsite (Cash and correct change greatly appreciated! No credit cards.)
- Check-in for players who registered in advance online: Check in and pay for Blitz or Both Events by 10:45am, or for Quads only by 2:15pm
- Onsite registration: Onsite registration for Blitz or Both Events is open until 10:30am, and for Quads only is open until 2:00pm
- Rating Determination: USCF ratings as of November 11 will be used to determine section eligibility for this event.

Schedule of Events
- 10:15am - 10:30am: LATE registration onsite for BLITZ (or both Blitz & Quads)
- 10:30am - 10:45am: Players who registered in advance online check in & pay for BLITZ (or for BOTH Blitz & Quads)
- 11:00am - 2:00pm: BLITZ Tournament & Awards; Planned to be 12 Rounds at G/5;d0.
- 1:45pm - 2:00pm: LATE registration onsite for QUADS Only
- 2:00pm - 2:15pm: Players who registered in advance online check in & pay for QUADS Only
- 2:30pm - 6:00pm: QUAD Tournament & Awards; 3 Rounds at G/30;d5.
TOURNAMENT DETAILS
Tournament Director: Robert Moore, Region I Director – Texas Chess Association
USCF Rated Event: Current USCF membership required - PLEASE update your membership prior to tournament day. Contact us if you need help registering or renewing your USCF membership.
Schedule: This event include TWO separate events (see schedule above). Both events will begin subsequent rounds as soon as possible after the previous round ends. Some short breaks may be added if time allows. See below for time controls for each event. Blitz Round 1 begins at 11 AM. Quads Round 1 begins at 2:30 PM.
Equipment: Chess sets and notation supplies will be provided. Some chess clocks will be available, but please bring your own clock if you have one.
BLITZ Sections
- BLITZ: Players registered online in advance arrive to pay and check in by 10:45am; Onsite registration is available until 10:30am; Blitz round 1 begins at 11:00am and ends around 2:00pm; 12-Round Swiss Blitz; No bye requests; Number of rounds may be adjusted based on number of players; Number of sections depends on number of players; G/5;d0; current USCF membership required; notation not required; see below for prize descriptions; see above for cost and registration deadlines.
- SUPPLIES PROVIDED: Chess sets and some clocks provided; We will not likely have enough clocks: PLEASE BRING A CLOCK IF YOU HAVE ONE!
QUADS Sections
- QUADS: Players registered in advance online arrive to pay an check in by 2:15pm; Rated Quads round 1 begins at 2:30pm and ends around 5:30pm. Players will be grouped by rating into quads of 4 players starting with the highest rated players; If lowest section has more than 4 players, it will be run as a 3-round swiss; G/30;d5; No bye requests; current USCF membership required; notation required; see below for prize descriptions; see above for cost and registration deadlines.
- SUPPLIES PROVIDED: Notation supplies provided for Rated Quad event; Chess sets and some clocks provided; We will not likely have enough clocks: PLEASE BRING A CLOCK IF YOU HAVE ONE!
PRIZES
Cash prizes for all BLITZ Sections: Cash prize guarantees are based on 50 registered players.
- The total guaranteed prize fund for 50 players is $250.
- If there are fewer than 50 players, prizes may be given for fewer than 3 places in each section.
- Ties will follow USCF rules for splitting cash prizes.
Medals for all QUAD sections:
- Medals will be awarded to the top finisher in each QUAD section.
- Standard tie breaks will be used.
PHOTOGRAPHY: Photos may be taken during the tournament and awards ceremony. These images may be shared with Texas Chess Association, news outlets, or other interested groups or individuals. Images may be used for promotion of subsequent chess events.
