Event Overview

West Orange Chess Club’s "Summer Spectacular"

The West Orange Chess Club is hosting our annual Summer Spectacular, a four-week long tournament on Tuesday evenings on August 1, 8, 15, and 22. One game is played per week.

The tournament is four rounds, Swiss-style.  All games are G75 d5 and begin promptly at 7pm.  This is a USCF-rated event; a USCF membership is required to play.

  1. Beginner: Under 500 - unrated players welcome, but must be age 12 or under
  2. Intermediate: Under 1200 - unrated players of any age welcome. Otherwise, a minimum 400 rating to play.
  3. Advanced: Under 1800 - Minimum 1000 rating to play
  4. Open - Minimum 1600 rating to play

All ratings are based on USCF’s published ratings for August.

$15 per player will be allocated towards the prize pool. The exact nature and value of prizes will be determined after the tournament starts to reflect the distribution of players in the event.

The registration fee is $25 ($20 for dues-paying club members).  Dues for 2023 are $10 (just $5 for West Orange residents, anyone under 18, and anyone over 55).  Players may opt to pay dues for 2023 thereby saving $5 off their entry fee.  All registration moneys will be collected in cash at the tournament.

Players may register online at....

... until August 1 at 5 p.m.  In-person registration is available on August 1 until 6:45 p.m.  Anyone arriving / attempting to register after that time may receive a half-point bye in round 1.  We STRONGLY encourage registering in advance.

One half-point bye is available on request for any of the first three games.  Byes must be requested by 6:00 pm on the day of the game.  Late requests may be worth zero points at the tournament director's discretion.  Subsequent bye requests and requests for round four byes are always worth zero points.

Questions, bye requests, and or notifications that one cannot attend a game should be phoned or texted Stephen Lorimor at 908-286-0720, or e-mailed to sdlorimor@comcast.net.

Pairings for rounds 2-4 will be posted at approximately 6:45pm.  Pairings will not be provided in advance.

All games will take place at the West Orange Chess Club, located at the Toby Katz Community Center, 650 Pleasant Valley Way in West Orange.  (It's tricky to find -- take the access road between the high school and baseball fields.  It's past the fields.)
