Event Overview

All ages and skill levels are invited to our Weekly Chess Night every Tuesday from 6:30pm-9:30pm (check-in 6-6:15pm).

There will be space for a USCF-rated tournament, a kids' workshop and unrated competition with prizes (ends by 8:00pm, but older kids may stay later if desired), and an adult casual play space with organized pairings.

Here are the details for the rated tournament open to all ages, but every player must be a member of USCF and have a valid USCF Member ID#:

  • 3-round Swiss style tourney, with time control of 25min+5 second increment (G/25+5), with games at approximately 6:30pm, 7:30, and 8:30;
  • Dual rated (affects regular and quick ratings);
  • Sections based on turnout to achieve approximately eight people per section.
  • Half point byes available for first or last round if communicated by 6:20pm.
  • Entry fee is $5 for Indy Chess members, and $10 for non-members.  First visit is free.
  • Walk-ins welcome by 6:15pm (no exceptions), but pre-registration/payment is encouraged at www.indychess.org/events.
    • Become a member for $45/year ($65/year for entire family) at www.indychess.org/membership.
    • Membership pays for itself if you come for just nine weekly Tuesday events in a year!
  • Medals for the winner(s).  Ten medals won can be traded for a "Ten Time Weekly Chess Champion" trophy.
  • Bring your own chess board, pieces, and clock, though a handful will be available.
    • Separate kids' area and adult casual will have boards/clocks provided.  Just the rated tournament players need to try to bring equipment.
  • Notation is required for all players in the rated tournament.  Sheets available.
  • Light concessions are available from the Latvian Community Center.

This is a great event for regular chess players, but also for beginners who want to play in their first rated tournament.  Many come to the casual night to observe the rated tournament, then join it in a future week.  Check out www.indychess.org/blog for posts about notation and playing in your first rated tournament.  All are welcome!
