SCHOLASTIC TEAM CHALLENGE by Indy Chess

Event Overview

Welcome to brand new Scholastic Sunday Team Challenge! K-12 students from the same school compete in teams of four as a warm-up event for the State Team Championship in late March! This event is NOT USCF-rated, so membership in USCF is not required.

Tournament Schedule & Format

  • Check-In: 1:45 PM – 2:00 PM (Look for signage to find entry door immediately off parking lot)

     
  • Player Meeting: 2:15 PM (Games begin immediately after).

     
  • Format: 4-Round Swiss across all sections. All teams play 4 rounds (win-vs-win, loss-vs-loss pairing).

     
  • Time Control: G/25+5 (25 minutes per player + 5-second bonus per move) with clocks provided for all sections.

     
  • Byes: No 1/2-point bye requests allowed.

     
  • Notation: Notation is encouraged but not required in any section.

Sections, Rosters, Entry Fees, & Prizes

  • Sections: 3rd Grade & Under | 6th Grade & Under | 8th Grade & Under

     
  • Rosters: Rosters are due to the Tournament Director (TD) by 2:00pm. Players much sit in order of strongest to weakest, and alternates must rotate in following that same principle. If a player is absent, boards 1-3 must be occupied/played.

     
  • Entry Fees: $15/player = $60/team (alternates are free)

     
  • Prizes:
    • Team Trophy to top 5 teams in each section
    • Individual Medals to players on 1st place team in each section

Venue & Spectator Information

  • Location & Parking: Free parking in the school lot. Wheelchair accessible.

     
  • Atmosphere: Silent playing room for maximum concentration. Parents can watch silently from gym bleachers or relax in the Cafeteria (aka the "Skittles Room" in chess-speak) next door.

     
  • Equipment: Sets, clocks, and notation sheets provided.

     
  • Supervision & Amenities: Coaches and parents are not allowed in the playing area (they can watch from the bleachers) after games have started. Kids under 12 require an adult present unless TD approved. Concessions (including hot food) should be available.

Registration

  • Coaches or Parent Coordinators should register teams at indychess.org/events, paying for the whole team ($60) upon registration to reserve their spot in the competition.
