SCHOLASTIC SUNDAY by Indy Chess

Welcome to Scholastic Sunday! Open to all K–12 students—from beginners playing their first tournament to experienced scholastic competitors.

Tournament Schedule & Format

• Check-In: 1:45 PM – 2:00 PM (Look for signage to find entry door immediately off parking lot)

   

• Player Meeting: 2:15 PM (Games begin immediately after).

   

• Format: 4-Round Swiss across all sections. All players play 4 rounds (win-vs-win, loss-vs-loss pairing).

   

• Time Control: G/25+5 (25 minutes per player + 5-second bonus per move) with clocks used in all sections.

   

• Byes: Up to two 1/2-point byes available upon request (email Click here to show mail address or inform the TD on-site).

   
• Notation: Notation is required in the Premiere section and encouraged for all rated sections.

Sections, Entry Fees, & Prizes

• Casual: $14 entry fee | Trophies for Top 5 | Unrated, so USCF membership not required

   

• Under 500, U800, & U1100 Sections: $24 entry fee | Trophies for Top 5 in each section | USCF-rated (affects both regular and quick ratings) so USCF membership required | Published ratings from 1st of the month used (live rating may be used upon request)

   

• Premiere Section (1100+): Same as rated sections above, plus a $50 Amazon Gift Card for 1st place (5+0 blitz playoff if tied; color chosen randomly).

   
• Special Awards:
  • Biggest Upset Medal by non-trophy winner (Rated sections only)
  • Sportsmanship Medal (Casual section only)
  • Notation Prize: Any player who notates at least one game picks a prize from the prize bin

Memberships

1. US Chess Federation (USCF): Required for rated sections ($24/year). Record your child’s USCF ID# prior to online registration. (Join USCF Here)

    

2. Indy Chess Membership (Optional): $50/yr student or $75/yr family. Save $5 off this event and all future events (including Weekly Tuesdays) while supporting local youth chess. (Join Indy Chess Here)

    

Venue & Spectator Information

• Location & Parking: Free parking in the school lot. Wheelchair accessible.
• Atmosphere: Silent playing room for maximum concentration. Parents can watch silently from gym bleachers or relax in the Skittles Room next door.
• Equipment: Sets, clocks, and notation sheets provided.
• Supervision & Amenities: Kids under 12 require an adult present unless TD approved. Concessions (including hot food) may be available.
