Who should volunteer?

National Event volunteers should have some experience either with chess tournaments, customer service, working with children or, ideally, all three. Because volunteers play an important role in the success of the tournament, missed or shortened shifts can cause coverage problems. Therefore, volunteers should plan to complete the entire shift they sign up for.

If you are responsible for small children at the event, you should probably seek a volunteer opportunity at a future time, unless the children are safely in the care of another responsible party (additional guardian, parent, etc.) during your volunteer shift.

What are the requirements for volunteers?

Volunteers must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Willing and able to pass a background check
  • Must complete the Volunteer SafeSport course (Approx. 15 minutes in length)
  • Flexible outlook. Tournament needs can fluctuate swiftly and volunteers must be able to pivot quickly.

What do volunteers do at events?

Volunteers have a variety of roles which can change from event to event. Examples of past duties performed by volunteers include:

  • Trophy setup and take down
  • Board set up and take down
  • Monitoring and assisting with pedestrian traffic flow
  • TD support
