Monthly Hoosier Scholastic - Third Sunday Every Month

Monroe County Public Library

Event Overview

Calling all kids! Eager to hone in your skills and play your peers from across the Hoosier state? The monthly Hoosier Scholastic is the place to be!

  • When: Third Sunday of every month, 1:30-4:30pm
  • Where: Monroe County Public Library, 303 E Kirkwood Ave, Bloomington, IN 47408 (Room 1C, 1B/1C, OR 2A—will notify in advance after registering; look for large chess sign or ask library staff)
  • Who: Any child in grades PK-12 with an active United States Chess Federation (USCF) membership
  • Time zone: Eastern Standard Time (EST)
  • Rounds: Four rounds, first one beginning at 1:30pm. Subsequent rounds will start as soon as possible. The event will end at 4:30pm. Arrive at the playing site no later than 1:15pm. Advanced registrants who arrive after 1:15pm may be withdrawn from the tournament at the tournament director’s discretion. Stay in communication with us to prevent this from happening.
  • Advance registration and payment: onlineregistration.cc, scroll to “Hoosier Chess Academy,” click on the desired month of play. Advance registration and payment closes at 12:30pm EST the day of the event.
  • On-site registration and payment: The window for on-site registration is from 12:45pm to 1:15pm. All players still waiting in a line by 1:15pm will be entered into the tournament; joining the line or showing up after 1:15pm without advanced registration means no entry into the tournament. You can pay on-site via PayPal, Venmo, cash, or check. These payment methods are only available for on-site registration, not advance registration. The tournament is free for children on free and reduced lunch and families on public assistance (e.g. SSI, SNAP).
  • Time control: G25, +5 increment
  • Notation policy, grades 2-12: All players in grades 2 and higher who know how to notate are required to notate all their moves for every tournament game, unless there are five or fewer minutes on a player’s side of the clock. Players younger than 2nd grade may fully notate if they wish.
  • Notation policy, grades PK-1: All players in grades PK-1 or any player who does not know how to notate will use a simplified method of notation. Tournament directors will provide help with using this notation method if necessary.
  • Sections: Elementary school and secondary school (middle/high). Sixth graders are considered to be in elementary school in these tournaments. We may combine into one section depending on player turnout.
  • Prizes: Medals to top three finishers in each section. However, prizes may change based on available resources—there may be more or fewer medals, trophies or gift cards instead of medals, or other combinations of prizes.
  • Entry fee: $5 in advance, $10 if registering on-site, full scholarships for those on free or reduced lunch
  • Food and drink policy: Drinks must have covered lids at all times, and large foods (e.g. pizza) must be eaten outside the library. Small snacks are okay.
