This tournament is only open to players who live or attend school in Maryland.
This tournament has eight different sections for players depending on their age and skill. Participants play only against opponents in their own section. The tournament begins at 9:20am for all sections.
Players in the championship sections will play four rounds at 9:30am, 11:45am, 2:00pm, and 4:15pm, with an awards ceremony starting at approximately 6:30pm. The time control is game in 60 minutes with a 5 second delay.
Players in the "under" sections will play five rounds at 9:30am, 10:40am, 11:45am, 12:50pm, and 2:00pm, with an awards ceremony starting at approximately 3:00pm. The time control is game in 25 minutes with a 5 second delay.
High School Championship Section
The official Maryland State High School Championship! The winner qualifies for the Denker National Tournament of High School State Champions. Players must be in grades 9-12 and rated at least 1150 to participate, unless they have requested permission to play up, which you can ask for here.
High School Under 1200 Section
For players who are in grades 9-12 rated under 1200 or who are unrated.
Middle School Championship Section
The official Maryland State Middle School Championship! The winner qualifies for the Barber National Tournament of Middle School State Champions. Players must be in grades 6-8 and rated at least 950 to participate, unless they have requested permission to play up, which you can ask for here.
Middle School U-1000 Section
For players who are in grades 6-8 rated under 1000 or who are unrated.
Elementary School Championship Section
The official Maryland State Elementary School Championship! The winner qualifies for the Rockefeller National Tournament of Elementary School State Champions. Players must be in grade 4 or 5 and rated at least 750 to participate, unless they have requested permission to play up, which you can ask for here.
Elementary School U-800 Section
For players who are in grade 4 or 5 rated under 800 or who are unrated.
Primary School Championship
The official Maryland State Primary School Championship! Players must be in grades K-3 and rated at least 550 to participate, unless they have requested permission to play up, which you can ask for here.
Primary School U-600
For players who are in grades K-3 rated under 600 or who are unrated.
Online registration is $45 before 9:30am on Monday, 5/16. From then until Friday 5/20 at noon online registration is $60. From noon on Friday 5/20 until 8:30am on the day of the tournament, registration is $75. After 8:30am on 5/21 it is $90, and players registering after 8:30am on 5/21 will not play the first round, and will receive a first round bye. Chess sets are provided, but bring a clock if you have one.
The girl with the highest established rating who participates in the event (any section) qualifies for the Haring National Tournament of Girl State Champions.
