Event Overview

FM John Anthony Curdo (1931-2022) is a legend of New England chess. Among his over 1,000 tournament victories include 17 Massachusetts state titles, 7 New England Open titles, 4 US Senior Opens, and the 1982 US Senior Championship. He beat multiple Grandmasters and wrote multiple books detailing his exploits. To honor his legacy, on November 14, the Wachusett Chess Club is holding a special event in honor of the 95th anniversary of his birth.

Location: McKay School Complex at 67 Rindge Rd, Fitchburg, MA 01420, Rooms C163 & C165. FREE PARKING is available, turn into the Section C parking lot area. Free snacks will be available.

Registration: Advance registration is available by email or phone. On-site registration at the McKay School Complex is also available up to 9:45 AM. You MUST be present by 9:45 AM to be paired for round 1; otherwise you may receive a bye for round 1 and start in round 2. Advanced registration is highly encouraged.

Entry fee: $5 per entry

Format: Swiss Pairings, No Elimination

Time Control: G/20;d5

Equipment: Please bring your own boards and clocks if you can. The club may not be able to provide players with equipment.

Rounds: 5

Round times: Pre-Tournament Meeting at 9:45 AM, Round 1 starts at 10 AM, A 30-minute Lunch Break will begin after the completion of Round 2

Byes: Up to 2 half-point byes can be taken in rounds 1-4.

Prizes: Chess books (including a limited number of Curdo's own "Chess Caviar" series), magazines, "Chess Chat" DVDs (https://www.fatv.org/shows#chess), chess sets and boards, analog clocks, and original scoresheets (some signed by Curdo himself). Prizes will be awarded ONLY after the completion of Round 5.
