J'Kennethon Smith was a multi-sport athlete and on the chess team at Wingfield High School.  He loved chess and the opportunity to share the game with young children.  He was one of the most kind & upstanding young men you'd ever want to meet.  A true exemplar of the words "committed" & "dependable".  

On July 9, 2022, J'Kennethon was tragically struck and killed by a vehicle while walking with a female cousin.  In his last act on Earth, "Ken" pushed this female family member to safety sacrificing himself for her sake.

In honor of his amazing gesture... the ONLY cash award at this event will be for the "SACRIFICE BRILLIANCY PRIZE".   Any player from any section who makes an impressive & successful sacrificial move in a game at this event is eligible.  

To enter the contest for "SACRIFICE BRILLIANCY PRIZE", a player must submit their scoresheet to the T.D.  For the scoresheet to be eligible for the prize, it must be 100% complete & legible.  The entries will be voted upon by a panel of highly experienced, championship-level players.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to MSCA (Mississippi Scholastic Chess Association) in the name of J'Kennethon Smith in the hopes to continue to grow scholastic chess throughout the state in his memory.
