Numerous female grandmasters, including GM Susan Polgar, have stated how more opportunities for just girls need to exist to encourage their development in the game of chess. With that spirit, we announce the Inaugural 2025 Girls City Chess Championship in Indianapolis! ALL girls K-12 and under 18 years old are eligible to play, regardless of residence, and are eligible for trophies. Only residents of the State of Indiana are eligible for the scholarship prizes.

 

Sections:

  • CHAMPIONSHIP/OPEN SECTION – Open to any girl that wants to compete for the top prizes!
  • U800 RESERVE SECTION – Open to any girls with a USCF rating below 800 or unrated.
  • U500 PRIMARY SECTION – Open to any girls with a USCF rating below 500 or unrated.

Prizes:

  • All sections have trophies for the top 5 finishers!
  • CHAMPIONSHIP/OPEN SECTION – Scholarships of $600 (1st place), $400 (2nd), $200 (3rd), $150 (4th)
  • U800 RESERVE SECTION – Scholarship of $100 to the top finisher
  • U500 PRIMARY SECTION – Trophies only

Schedule:

  • Check-in: 8:30a-9:00am
  • Player meeting/games: 9:15am
  • Following rounds: Begin immediately upon prior round's completion
  • Lunch: 30 minutes allowed after round 2 for Championship section only
  • Awards for Reserve and Primary: 12:15p or earlier
  • Awards for Championship: Upon completion of games

Tournament Format:

  • Four rounds, Swiss style (all players play all rounds)
  • Time controls: Championship section - G/45 min. + 5 seconds, All others - G/25 min. + 5 seconds
  • Players get 1 point for a win, 1/2 for a draw/stalemate, and 0 for a loss.  The player with the most points at the end wins.
  • Standard tiebreaks will be used for trophy assignment in case of ties. Scholarship prizes will be split evenly in case of tie.
  • All equipment provided, including boards, pieces, clocks, notation sheets (only required in Championship section).

The event is USCF-rated, meaning all players must sign up as member of the US Chess Federation at least 24 hours before the tournament starts (join here: https://new.uschess.org/join-us-chess).  When you register online here, you'll be asked to enter your USCF ID#.  A "rated" tournament means that it follows the USCF rules, and that the players get a chess rating after the tournament ends showing their skill level.  It can go up or down if/as they play more tournaments.

 

The entry fee is FREE for players, but a donation of $20 is encouraged for attendees who are able to do so to help cover costs.

 

Other details for parents:

  • Coffee and water will be complementary. Other light concessions may be available for sale.
  • There is a waiting room available with chairs and MANY games.  There is guest WiFi (no password).
  • All children 12 and under must have a responsible adult present at all times.  Parents may take responsibility for other parent's children, but children must be with the adult when not in the playing room.
  • Food is not allowed at playing tables.  Drinks with lids are.
  • Parents can watch the games from the outer walls of the playing room, but may not be near the tables. They may not use devices in the room while games are being played.
