This tournament has six different sections for players depending on their age and skill. Children play only against opponents in their own section. The first round is at 1:00pm for all sections. The tournament concludes around 5:00pm with an awards ceremony where the top players and top schools receive trophies.
* Players should arrive around 12:45pm
* The first round begins at 1:00pm
* All sections are non-elimination, and all players participate in all four rounds
* We provide FREE US Chess Federation memberships for all participants, a $17 value!
* Prices will rise from $33 to $50 the Tuesday before the tournament. Starting Friday at noon, registration is $60. Players who register after 12:30pm on Saturday will miss the first round.
* Chess sets are provided, but bring a clock if you have one.
Here are the sections:
Beginner Grades K-5 U-400
This sections is open to players in their first tournament, or more experienced players with ratings under 400. Each player will play four games, and players using a clock should set it to G/25 with a 5 second delay. Most games will not have clocks.
Intermediate Grades K-5 400-799
This sections is open to players in K-5 rated between 400 and 800. Each player will play four games, and players using a clock should set it to G/25 with a 5 second delay. Most games will not have clocks.
Beginner/Intermediate Grades 6-12 U-800 Section
This section is for middle and high school students in their first tournament, or more experienced players with ratings under 800. Each player will play four games, and players using a clock should set it to G/25 with a 5 second delay. Most games will not have clocks.
Advanced K-12 800-1199
This sections is open to players in K-12 rated between 800 and 1199. Each player will play four games, and players using a clock should set it to G/25 with a 5 second delay.
Junior Varsity K-12 1200-1599
This sections is open to players in K-12 rated between 1200 and 1599. Each player will play four games, and players using a clock should set it to G/25 with a 5 second delay.
Varsity K-12 1600+
This sections is open to players in K-12 rated 1600 or higher. Each player will play two games, and players using a clock should set it to G/60 with a 5 second delay. This tournament is a MD-Sweet-16 Qualifier, in which Varsity players who are MD residents will earn MD-Sweet-16 Varsity Points.
