Fall Quads at the Meadowdale Public Library

Meadowdale Public LIbrary

Event Overview

Quads at the Meadowdale Public Library

Saturday, September 28, 2024, with Round 1 at 9:30 am

Come out and enjoy the Fall weather and play chess at the Meadowdale Public Library!

Place: Meadowdale Public Library, 4301 Meadowdale Blvd, North Chesterfield, VA. This is a beautiful facility and fantastic venue for small chess tournament!

Registration: www.vachess.org, or onsite at the library starting at 8:30 am on Saturday.

Round 1: At 9:30 am. Registration closes at 9:15 if you want to play in Round 1 of the tournament. NOTE: Our 9:30 am start time is 30 minutes earlier than the start time at this same event in April 2024.

Format: Quads, with 3 rounds of play. This means that after we receive all entries, we rank-order the players from highest-rated to lowest-rated based on their September 2024 US Chess rating using the higher of each player’s over-the-board and online regular ratings. Next, we divide the players into groups of 4 players (hence the name “Quads”), with the top 4 players forming Quad-1, the next 4 players forming Quad-2, etc. Within each Quad, each player plays a game against the other 3 players. Click here to read about the Quads format. It is very unsportsmanlike to “withdraw” from a Quad.

Time Control: Game-60 with 5 seconds of Time Delay per move for all 3 rounds. We have clocks for all players to use, but you are welcome to bring your own!

Schedule: Rounds at 9:30 am, 12-noon, and 2:45 pm. Games in any Quad can start earlier if both players in a pairing agree to start early.

Eligibility:

  • Quads are open to all adult players (with or without a US Chess rating).
  • Scholastic-age players (e.g., in grades K-12) also may play in the Quads tournament if they have had an over-the-board or online US Chess Regular Rating of at least 1200 in any US Chess Rating Supplement or after any US Chess rated tournament in the past year (since Sept 1, 2023).
  • US Chess Federation membership is required for all Quad participants.

Entry Fee: $30 in advance, $35 starting Thursday, Sept. 26th and at the tournament site. We will retain $5 from your entry if you enter and then withdraw before Round 1.

Prizes: Cash. 1st Place ($70), 2nd Place ($40) in each Quad. If the lowest Quad has more than 4 players the prize fund will increase for that section and may include a 3rd place cash prize.

Chess Notation: Is REQUIRED for all players. We will provide "score sheets" for players to take chess notation, but players need to bring their favorite pens or pencils.

Chess Sets and Chess Clocks: We will provide chess sets and chess clocks for all players, but players may also use their own equipment. If you use your own clock, it must be capable of being set for the proper time control.

Pre-Tournament Zoom Meeting. We will schedule a pre-tournament information meeting on Zoom. We usually conduct this meeting on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evening before the tournament at 7 pm or 7:30 pm. Watch the VA Chess Federation website (www.vachess.org) for information.
