May Statement:

My name is Daniel Serna, and I am honored to announce my candidacy for the Executive Board of US Chess. With a professional background in finance, a proven track record as President of New Mexico Chess, and experience in business management, I bring a unique combination of strategic vision, fiscal responsibility, and organizational leadership to the table. My goal is to help US Chess grow and innovate as the premier organization for chess enthusiasts across America.

As a finance professional, I have spent years analyzing data, managing budgets, and making strategic decisions to ensure financial stability and growth. These skills are directly applicable to the challenges facing US Chess. The organization must navigate complex financial landscapes, allocate resources effectively, and invest in initiatives that promote chess at all levels. My expertise will ensure that US Chess remains fiscally sound while expanding its programs, supporting players, and enhancing its national and international presence.

As President of New Mexico Chess, I have worked to promote the game at the state level. Under my leadership, we have increased participation in tournaments, expanded outreach to schools and communities, and developed partnerships to make chess more accessible. These experiences have given me a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing state chess organizations. I am committed to leveraging this knowledge to strengthen the relationship between US Chess and its state affiliates, ensuring that resources are distributed equitably and effectively.

My background in business management has equipped me with the skills to lead teams, streamline operations, and implement innovative solutions. I understand the importance of collaboration, transparency, and accountability in achieving organizational goals. If elected, I will work closely with US Chess to foster a culture of inclusivity and excellence. I believe that by listening to the voices of players, organizers, and supporters, we can build a stronger, more united chess community.

One of my priorities is to expand chess outreach. Chess is more than a game; it is a tool for developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and resilience. I will advocate for initiatives that bring chess into schools, community centers, and underserved areas, ensuring that every child can experience the benefits of this timeless game. Additionally, I will support programs that nurture competitive players, from scholastic champions to elite grandmasters, helping them achieve their full potential on the national and international stage.

I am also committed to embracing technology to enhance the chess experience. From online platforms to data-driven insights, technology has the power to connect players and grow the game. I will champion initiatives that leverage these tools while preserving the integrity and tradition of over-the-board play.

In conclusion, I am running for the Executive Board because I believe in the power of chess and the potential of US Chess to lead the way in promoting and supporting the game. I humbly ask for your vote and the opportunity to serve you on the Executive Board. Together, we can build a brighter future for chess in America.

Thank you for your support.

June Statement:

Chess has been more than just a game to me; it's a passion that has shaped my character and instilled in me a deep appreciation for strategy, critical thinking, and the pursuit of excellence.

For years, I have been an active member of the New Mexico Chess community. Through these experiences, I have developed a strong understanding of the game's nuances, its competitive landscape, and the diverse needs of its players.

I became involved in chess governance when I realized that many areas of chess were lacking volunteers and help. I started as a tournament director after playing when I realized that we needed more events to be successful in my community. After creating the largest chess club in our state and distributing more prize money than any chess affiliate in state history, I started working on developing the talent in our state. This meant learning from the best coaches in the world and creating a pathway that was available for all players. I have a track record of students succeeding, even beyond my own Class B rating, as they work towards master with our coaching plans. I learned from successful clubs and affiliates around the country and brought the best ideas to my home state to foster success.

We are currently working on opening our own local chess center that will provide a safe place for scholastic players and a home for chess players in the state of New Mexico. I believe in the power of chess, and I want to bring that passion and drive to a larger level. US Chess is a strong organization with a great vision and bold goals. I hope that you will allow me to be a part of that team to work with the best representatives from around the country. Together, we can continue to grow chess in America.

I recently saw a statistic that estimated that 13.5 million people in the United States play chess regularly. Of that number, only 120,000 are US Chess members. I believe that we have a lot of growth potential if we can reach those masses. By improving our technology, player outreach, and accessibility for new players, we can reach one million US Chess members. That is a realistic goal that can be accomplished from an ambitious vision. Let’s work together to grow chess in every state, at every level, and continue to elevate the United States as the strongest nation for chess internationally. I appreciate all the hard work from every person in every state that is working on these same goals. You have all created a great community for me, our experienced players and our future generations of chess players to come.

Thank you for taking the time to get to know me and my candidacy for US Chess. I wish you the best of luck in your games and communities and I hope to see you over the board sometime soon.

Sincerely,

Daniel Serna
