Event Overview

The American Open Action Tournament runs concurrently with the 61st American Open Chess Championship - Main Event and Scholastic Tournaments.

 

A. Schedule & Location

  • Sunday afternoon, November 29, 2026
  • Location: Hyatt Regency Orange County 11999 Harbor Blvd. Garden Grove, California 92840 (click here to map)
  • Book Room nights: $169/night + taxes/fees

B. Tournament Format

  • Round times: 12:00 pm – 1:15 pm – 3:00 pm – 4:15 pm – 5:30 pm
  • 5 rounds Swiss-Sys Format
  • Time Control: Game 30 minutes / 5 seconds delay
  • Games will be US Chess rated.
  • Sections TBD depending on the number and ratings of the players (Previous year's participant list)
  • Maximum one half-point bye allowed

C. Registration

  • Entry Fee: $50 advance registration by November 15; $60 by November 24 ($70 onsite; discount $20 available for registered players of the Main or the Scholastic Event)
  • $5 admin fee for cancellations & refunds.

D. Other Info:

  • Awards: $1,000 Prize Fund! (based on 30 players)
  • Players must have an active US Chess Federation membership.
  • Players are encouraged to bring their tournament regulation-size chess set, scorebook, and clock. Items will also be available for purchase at the pop-up chess store.

  3. Junior Varsity - Saturday (rated tournament for K-5th graders) on Saturday, November 28
  4. Junior Varsity - Sunday (rated tournament for K-12th graders) on Sunday, November 29
  5. Blitz Tournament (for kids and adults) on Saturday night, November 28 at 9:30 PM
