Event Overview

$5800 in cash prizes based on 80 paid entries

  • 5 Round Swiss; Up to two irrevocable half-point byes allowed. Byes must be committed 1 hr before Round 2.
  • Schedule: 
    • 3 Day: 7/5 at 7 PM, 7/6 at 10 AM and 4 PM, 7/7 at 9 AM and 3 PM
    • 2 Day: 7/6 at 10 AM and 1 PM, schedules merge starting round 3
    • Premier section has only a 3 Day schedule.

  • On-site registration closes 30 minutes before the start of round one (after that players may register with a half-point bye)
  • Three sections: Premier (FIDE-rated), U1900, and U1500
  • Top section is FIDE rated and follows FIDE pairing rules.
  • $5800, total prize fund:
    • Premier (min rating 1800 - see notes): $1200/$700/$400/$200
    • U1900: $1000/$500/$250/$150
    • U1500: $600/$300/$150/$100
    • Mixed Doubles: $250 - prize to the best male/female 2-player team combined score among all sections, must have a combined average rating less than 2200. May play in different sections, registration due before the start of Round 3.
    • Premier section - for the minimum rating requirement, you may play up if your rating has reached 1800 after any tournament within the past calendar year.
    • Free entry to GM/IM/WGM/WIM if committed by 5/1 ($97 deducted from prizes)
  • Time control:
    • 3 Day Schedule: All games G/90+30
    • 2 Day Schedule: Rounds 1 and 2 are G/60;d5
    • Default/Forfeit Time: 1 hour
  • Entry fee for all sections: $97 by 4/1, $117 by 5/1, $137 by 6/15, $157 on/after 6/16
  • Re-entries are permitted in all sections except Premier -- the price to re-enter is $75.
  • Hotel reservations with chess rate available. $129/night + taxes. Must mention ‘Independence Day Chess Tournament' over the phone at 1-800-228-9290 or 703-471-9500. Last day to get the chess rate is 6/14/2024.
  • Side Events: Scholastic and Blitz Tournaments on Saturday 7/6
  • Please bring a clock. Boards and pieces are provided. No electronic boards or notation devices permitted.
  • Withdrawals are subject to a $10 processing fee.
  • All sections are USCF-rated. The top section is also FIDE-rated.
