2025 Ohio Elementary, Middle, High School

State Championships

April 26th – 27th

Qualifications: Any student enrolled in an Ohio school or home schooled in Ohio in grades K-12 is eligible to participate.

Elementary Sections: SATURDAY ONLY

  • Elementary Championship (K-5) (Winner qualifiers for Rockefeller and receives $300 stipend). 5 Rounds: G/45; d5
  • U1000 (K-5), U700 (K-5), U400 (4-5), U400 (K-3). 5 Rounds: G/30; d5

 

High School/Middle School Sections: SATURDAY AND SUNDAY

  • High School Championship (9-12) (Winner qualifies for Denker and receives $300 stipend). 6 Rounds. Rounds 1-3: G/60; d5, Rounds 4-6: G/90; d5
  •  Middle School Championship (6-8) (Winner qualifies for Barber and receives $300 stipend). 6 Rounds. Rounds 1-3: G/60; d5, Rounds 4-6: G/90; d5
  • U1300 (6-12), U1000 (9-12), U1000 (6-8), U500 (6-12). 6 Rounds: G/60; d5

 

All players must have an active US Chess membership (uschess.org). Columbus Chess Academy will provide all sets. Students need to bring their own clocks. Notation is required for all students for grades 6 and above and in all Championship sections. Limit 1 half-point bye, must be requested before round 2 pairings are posted. April official USCF ratings used. All Ohio Scholastic Chess Association guidelines for this event will be followed. Under sections may change if there are too few participants in any section. If this happens, those in affected sections will be notified.

Registration: Go to https://www.kingregistration.com/event/2025_ohio_state_championships for online registration. To register by mail, go to columbuschessacademy.org for PDF flyer. $45 received by 4/19, $50 after. No onsite entries. Online registration will close at 6 PM on Friday 4/25. Discounted entry for students for students in financial need, contact Kathy before registering. Rooms for teams available to reserve, first-come, first-served; contact Kathy for details.

Doors open at 8:30 AM. No section changes after 9:30 AM. Announcements at 9:50 AM.

Awards: Elementary Sections: Trophies to all players achieving a score of 3.5 points or higher. Middle/High School Sections: Trophies to all players achieving a score of 4 points or higher. Trophies to top 3 teams in each section (top 4 scores count for team). All students will receive a participation medal.

Food: There will be a concession stand selling reasonably priced food and beverages. Many restaurants within a 2-mile radius.

Additional Programming Sunday: We will have game analysis, side events, and a free community (nonrated) tournament open to all.
