State Championship Event

Event Overview

Eligibility: Any female student or student of a gender minority enrolled in an Ohio school, or home schooled in Ohio, in grades K-12 are eligible to participate.

 

Sections and Time Control:

Championship (K-12): 5 rounds G/45; d5. Most competitive section. USCF Rated.

U1000 Premier (K-12): 5 rounds G/30; d5. Must have a rating below 1000. USCF Rated.

U600 Reserve (K-12): 5 rounds G/30; d5. Must have a rating below 600. USCF Rated.

Elementary Novice (K-5, non-rated): 5 rounds G/30; d5. Students in grades K-3 without a rating or with 10 rated games or fewer. Not USCF Rated.

 

Schedule: 

Doors Open at 8:30 am. Announcement at 9 am. No section changes after 9 am. Round 1 starts at 9:30 am for all sections. Estimated award ceremony at 16:30 (Nonrated, U600, U1000) and 18:30 (Championship)

 

Round Times:

Championship (K-12): 9:30/11:30/13:15/15:00/16:45, lunch break 11 - 11:30

Other sections: 9:30/10:45/12:30/13:45/15:00, lunch break 12 – 12:30

 

Entry Fee: $40 before February 23rd, $45 thereafter. Last day to register is February 28th, 6 PM. No on-site registrations accepted.

Format: 5 Round Swiss System Individual/Team all sections. Students play all rounds, no elimination. Can request one 0.5-point bye before start of round 2.

 

Notation is required in all sections except Elementary Novice (K-5, non-rated) and who plays a game with students in grades K-3 in the U600 Reserve Section. In these sections, notation is not required though a player may lose the right to make claims requiring a score sheet. Unrated players may choose any appropriate section.

 

Current USCF membership is required to play in the rated sections. Players in the rated sections must be registered with http://www.uschess.org before the tournament.

 

Awards: Trophies to all players achieving a score of 3.5 points or higher. Trophies to top 3 teams in each section (top 4 scores count for team). Two or more players enrolled in the same school in the same section will be eligible for a team prize. Participation medals available to all students.

This is also a national level scholastic invitationals qualifying event. The top finisher of the Championship section will receive a $300 stipend from OSCA and qualify as state delegate for the 2025 Ruth Haring National Girls’ Tournament of Champions in Middleton, WI. 

 

Withdrawal & Refund: if you withdraw before 6 pm on Friday, February 28th you will get a full refund.
