Event Overview

The West Orange Chess Club Championships is our annual championship event.  It's a five-round Swiss event held over five Tuesday evenings: March 14, 21, 28, and April 4 and 11.  All games begin at 7 p.m.

All games are G75 d5.  Three sections: Open, Under 1600, and Under 1000.  This is a USCF-rated event; a membership is required to play.

The event is open to club members only, but anyone can join the club for one year for $10.  ($5 for West Orange residents, anyone under 18, and anyone over 55).  The event itself has a $20 registration fee to join.

Players may register online at....

... until March 14 at 5 p.m.  In-person registration is also available on March 14 until 6:45 p.m.  Anyone attempting to register after 6:45 will be admitted, but may need to take a half-point bye in round one.  (As in, we'd like to start the event on time.)

One half-point bye request per player is available for rounds 1-4.  It must be requested via e-mail, phone, or text no later than 5:30 p.m. on the day of a game.

Bye requests, questions, and/or notices that one cannot attend a game should be phoned or texted Stephen Lorimor at 908-286-0720, or e-mailed to sdlorimor@comcast.net.

75% of all entry fees will be awarded as prizes. The exact amounts and method of distribution will be determined once the tournament begins.  (We like to spread the awards across the event once we know the distribution of players.)

The winner of the Open section is crowned "Club Champion".  This title cannot be split (ie; no co-champions).  Ties for the title will be broken as follows:  Two rated G45 d5 games will be held on April 18.  If still tied, two rated G30 d5 games will be held on April 25. If still tied, two rated G15 d5 games will be held on May 2.  If still tied, one (unrated) "Armageddon" game will also be held the same day.  Color assignments for the Armageddom games are randomly determined.  White is G5, Black is G4, no increment or delay.  A draw is a victory for Black.

All games will take place at the West Orange Chess Club, located at the Toby Katz Community Center, 650 Pleasant Valley Way in West Orange.  (It's tricky to find -- take the access road between the high school and baseball fields.  It's past the fields.)
