2023 San Francisco Scholastic Chess Championship

Annual free heritage event for our scholastic chess community

1. Dates & Location

• Golden Gate Park, County Fair Building    1199 9th Ave., San Francisco, CA 94122    Parking: on the streets around the park. We do not provide dedicated parking for event attendees.

• Date: Saturday, March 4   Onsite registration: Saturday: 9AM - 9:30AM Players' Information Meeting: Monday, February 27, at 6PM PT. Zoom link will be posted here.  

2. Tournament Format

• Tournament Format: Swiss System

• 6 Sections (play in one of the six):

4 Non-rated sections based on school grade: Grade K-1, Grade 2-3, Grade 4-5, Grade 6-12

2 USCF-rated sections based on USCF regular rating: u800 and 800+ Play-up to the 800+ section only open to players with USCF 600+ rating (supplemental or actual, OTB or ONL).

• Time Control: G/30 d5 (Game in 30 minutes with 5 second delay each move.)

• Total Rounds: 4 rounds

• Round times: 10am, 11:15am, 12:30pm, 1:45pm.  Round times are tentative, and subject to adjustments.

• Award ceremony: 3PM   Expected End Time: around 4PM

• Tiebreak: Standard scholastic tiebreak methods following current published US Chess Scholastic Regulations will be used to differentiate between players with same final results. 

 

3. Side Events & Specials

• 12:30PM: Simultaneous exhibition with TBA Special Guest.

• Free event T-shirt to all participants!  

4. Byes

• Half point bye can be requested in case a player can't make one or two rounds.

• Maximum number allowed: 2

• Last round to request a bye: Round 4  

5. Awards

• Trophies to top 10 players in each section.

• Top 5 overall teams across the four non-rated sections. Top 5 overall teams across the two USCF-rated sections.

• Medals to all participants who did not earn a trophy.

7. Eligibility

• Players in the USCF-rated sections must have current US Chess Federation membership. Expiration date of their US Chess membership must be later than the last day of the tournament.

8. Tournament Rules

• Standard US Chess rules apply.

• Forfeit time is 30 minutes.

9. FAQ

• What do the time controls mean? Time controls tell you how much time you have for each game. G30;d5: Game in 30 minutes with a 5-second delay with each move. This means you get 30 minutes, your opponent gets 30 minutes, and at each move the clock counts down from 5 to 0 before the player's time starts. If a player doesn't use up the whole 5 seconds, the remainder of that time is lost.

• How many games/rounds? Each player will play 4 games; win or lose, players are expected to play their games. This is not an elimination competition.
