Location: In the heart of downtown Washington DC near the White House and Metro Center.

 

Closest Metro Train Station: Metro Center (Blue, Orange, Red and Silver Lines) Indiana University at The Willard Office Building is two blocks away from the Metro Center Train Station.

 

Parking: Meter street parking is available and parking in the Willard Office Building parking garage cost between $22 -$35.

 

Entry Fee: $50 + taxes by 7/8 Early Bird Special, $65 + taxes by 8/8, $75 + taxes by 9/8. Free entry to the first five students that register whose parents are retired (honorable discharge) or active-duty service members of the United States Air Force. Parents must show proof of active or retired service (honorable discharge) in the United States Air Force for their child to participate for free. Purpose: This event is to honor the life and legacy of International Chess Master IM Emory Tate a five time United States Armed Forces Chess Champion and a six time Indiana State Chess Champion.

 

Two Sections:

High School / Junior High School (7th - 12th)
1st Place $200, 2nd Place $100, 3rd Place $50
Top Junior High Student 7th - 9th $100

Elementary School (K – 6th)
1st Place $200, 2nd Place $100, 3rd Place $50
Top Elementary Student K – 2nd $100

 

Trophies and cash prizes are awarded to the top three players in both sections and the top Elementary K – 2nd and Junior High 7th - 9th school students.

 

While supplies last free copies of the book Triple Exclam!!! The Life and Games of Emory Tate, Chess Warrior by authors Dr. Daaim Shabazz, GM Maurice Ashley and GM Yasser Seirawan will be given to the participating students on a first come first served basis based on order of registration. Register right away to secure your copy! Students will also have the opportunity to win prizes by solving chess puzzles.

 

Students will play 5SS USCF rated games. USCF Membership is required. No elimination! Each game is 30 minutes with no delay. Possible 5 - minute blitz playoff if necessary to determine who wins the tie breaker. Game times are 9:30am, 11:30am, 1:00pm, 2:30pm & 4:00pm with a trophy ceremony following the final match. Please arrive between 9:00am - 9:20am for check-in, rounds start exactly at 9:30am. Players should bring their own sets and clocks. Chess equipment is not provided! No half point byes are provided. A top Elementary K- 2nd grade student prize is offered to the top performing Elementary school student below 3rd grade. K - 2nd grade Elementary school students are also eligible to win (double prizes) including any Elementary School (K – 6th) 1st, 2nd or 3rd place prize and the top Elementary K – 2nd grade prize based on their performance. A top Junior High school 7 - 9th grade student prize is offered to the top performing Junior High school student who plays in the Junior High / High School section. Junior High School students are also eligible to win (double prizes) including any Junior High / High School (7th –12th) 1st, 2nd or 3rd place prize and the top Junior High 7th – 9th grade prize based on their performance.

 

All prizes are guaranteed! Regardless of turnout! Please do not bring any additional guest to this event, only one parent per child, space is limited. Parents are not allowed in the playing area but are welcome to stay in the lobby area. Space is limited to the first 50 students who register. No registration will take place on the day of the event.
