Event Overview

The Downriver Chess Club, in collaboration with the Four Horsemen of UNO, present the second ever, Downriver Classic. The winner of this annual event is crowned the Downriver Champion of New Orleans. Any USCF member available to compete and win prizes, title only goes to residents of Greater New Orleans area.

Tournament details: Five round, two-section (U1400 & open/unrated), swiss system, G/40;d5, USCF dual-rated tournament.

Prize fund: Prize fund is $500 b/40. $125 will be added to the prize fund for every 10 players above 40. Prize fund breakdown as follows:

1st in open/unrated, $200 2nd in open/unrated, $100

1st in U1400, $100

Largest upset prize, $100

Tiebreaks: Cash prizes to be split among all tied entrants. For title only, a tie will be broken by unrated armageddon style blitz matches. If 3+ players tied, the tiebreaks modified median, solkoff, cumulative, and cumulative of opposition in order will be used to decide the top two players to compete in an armageddon blitz match (white with 5 minutes, black with 4 minutes, draws for black are a win for black). Pawn grab to determine color.

Date: Saturday, January 28th, registration 9:30AM-10:15AM, first round pairs at 10:30AM. Please do not enter the tournament hall prior to 9:30AM.

Round times: 10:30AM, 12:10PM, [meal break], 2:40PM, 4:20PM, 6:00PM, prizes at 7:30PM. Round times are tentative and subject to change.

Venue: The Atchafalaya Room (#208), on the second floor of the University of New Orleans’ University Center, located at 2000 Lakeshore Drive. Free parking available in the University Center lot and Administration lot. Parking map here.

Pairing: The TDs will assign you to the U1400 or open section. If you have a regular rating and a quick rating, the higher rating will be used. If you have only a regular rating or a quick rating, that rating will be used. If you are paired in the U1400 but would like to play in the open, just let us know. If you are in the open but would like to be in the U1400, be prepared to make a case for yourself to play in a lower

section. You may check your section upon registration. Unrated players do not qualify for an upset prize and will be assigned to the open section.

Eligibility: $20 entry fee if purchased by 1/26/23. $30 at the door. Capacity limited to first 80 players, pre-register to guarantee your slot. At least 10 entries to be held for day of registration. Bye policy: Two 0.5 point byes available upon request, must be made prior to pairing round three in non-emergency situations. Bye requests cannot be canceled following the start of round 3.
