2023 College Chess Committee Report

The year of 2022/23 showed great promise for the future of college chess with one of the largest Pan American Intercollegiate Team Championships in decades, the introduction of the U1800 at the event, and the incorporation of sponsors for the tournament.

2022 U.S. Collegiate Online Rapid and Blitz Championships
November 13th & 20th, Chess.com organized the 2022 U.S. Collegiate Online Rapid and Blitz Championships.

Webster University won the rapid championship. 

GM Benjamin Gledura and IM Stavroula Tsolakidou became the individual U.S. men’s and women’s champions, respectively. 

In the blitz tournament, The University of Missouri won the championship. GM Mikhail Antipov won the individual championship and WGM Annamaria Marjanovic became the U.S. collegiate blitz women’s champion.

2023 Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Championship 

The 2023 Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Championship was held in Seattle from January 5-8, 2023, and was organized by Corporate Esports Association with additional sponsorship by Redbull and Chess.com. This year introduced the wildly successful U1800 section resulting in 85 teams from 46 different universities. 

The chief organizer, Florian Helff, did a wonderful job growing our beloved Pan-Ams and made Seattle feel like home for so many universities.

Webster University won the championship, with University of Missouri finishing second and The University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley finishing third. 

The B team from Saint Louis University won the top women’s team award. 

The University of Maryland Baltimore College won Division 2.

The University of California at Santa Cruz won Division 3.

The University of Texas at Austin’s B team won Division 4.

The University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign's C team won Division 5.

Connecticut College won the small college award.

2023 President’s Cup: The Final Four of College Chess

The Final Four was held April 2-3 2022, in St. Louis, MO, and was hosted by Webster University.
Webster University won the event.

During the 2023/2024 Academic Year the Collegiate Chess Committee will be working towards promoting more over the board collegiate tournaments, have over 100+ participating teams at the 2024 Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Championships, look into the possibility of having a Collegiate Women’s Championship, sponsorships for these events, and clearing up eligibility rules.
