2023 Arizona Spring Training Classic

Visit sunny Arizona in February! Enjoy the weather, play chess, & catch some Spring Training games!

Format: 5-round Swiss

Time Control: G/90 + 30 sec increment

Sections: Open (2000+), U2000 (1400-1999), under 1400

USCF regular ratings apply for all sections. Top two sections are also FIDE rated.

USCF membership required (may be purchased or renewed at registration or on site)

February 2023 USCF ratings will be used for pairings and eligibility, however other ratings (e.g., USCF Online ratings, CCA minimum ratings, converted FIDE, or other national ratings) may be used if higher. The decision of the chief tournament director regarding eligibility or other rating issues is final.

A maximum of two half-point byes are available. Byes must be requested no later than 30 minutes before the round starts. Round 4 & 5 byes must be requested before the start of Round 3. Round 5 bye is irrevocable.

Boards, sets, AND clocks will be provided for tournament and simul play. None will be supplied for skittles.

Special Guest: GM Melik Khachiyan, FIDE Senior Trainer; FIDE Trainers’ Commission Councillor for North America; Head Coach of US Women’s National Team 2010 – 2017; and Captain of US Women’s National team since 2018, will present a 1-hr lecture and conduct a 44-board simul at 7pm on Saturday, Feb 25!

Prizes: Total Prize Fund $2600 based on 100 paid entries
 Open Section (FIDE Rated): $900/$450/$225, Top U2200: $100
 U2000 Section (FIDE Rated): $500/$250/$125, Top U1600: $50
 U1400 Section:  1st - Trophy + 1yr Diamond Membership to Chess.com
                            2nd - Trophy + 6mo Diamond Membership to Chess.com
                            3rd - Trophy + 3mo Diamond Membership to Chess.com

Entry Fees:
  Open Section (FIDE Rated):   $90 through Feb 10, $100 through Feb 24, $105 on site.
  U2000 Section (FIDE Rated): $75 through Feb 10, $85 through Feb 24, $90 on site
  U1400 Section: $60 through Feb 10, $70 through Feb 24, $75 on site

 Players may play up one section for an additional $15 if their rating is within 100 points of the section minimum rating

 Entries limited to 100 players total.
